CONFERENCE: 20TH JUNE 2014, EDINBURGH
The Publishing: Evolution, Disruption & the Future conference was held in the University of Edinburgh Business School on 12th June 2013 and it was a huge success. The conference attracted over 200 delegates, in addition to several more people who watched live online! We are already preparing for the June 2014 conference which is set to be just as amazing! Cameron is a recovering academic in the general area of biophysics and structural biology interested in how to make research and scholarship more effective and efficient using the capabilities provided by the Web and Internet. He is Advocacy Director for the Public Library of Science (PLOS), nonprofit publisher, membership, and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.
Brendan is the Digital Commercial Director at The List Ltd., Scotland's largest and one of the UK's best events and entertainment sites. He has been working in digital account management for over 8 years. Brendan has headed up scotsman.com's commercial operation which, at the time, was the largest media website in Scotland. Subsequently he has led the revenue growth of List.co.uk and helped to build the business from a small regional website into one of the largest events and cultural websites in the UK.
Bill Jamieson was executive editor of The Scotsman for 11 years, regularly writing about finance, economics, politics and current affairs. He was also the economics columnist for sister title Scotland on Sunday and prior to that was economics editor of The Sunday Telegraph for seven years. Bill's books on economics and politics include An Illustrated Guide to the British Economy and Scotland's Ten Tomorrows. Since stepping down from The Scotsman, which he continues to write for, he has established Scot-Buzz, the one-stop business news website aiming to help business enterprise and the SME sector. It comprises a daily summary and flash comment on Scottish economic and business data.
Matt is Director of Communication & Events at the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM). He is a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner who has worked across STM, transport and engineering for the past 10 years. He is responsible for Association communications, both externally and with the membership. Matt is a past board member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a regular industry speaker on digital communications, and measurement and evaluation techniques.
Tom is Co-Founder of Ubiquity Press and a PhD student on an interdisciplinary project between University College Hospital and the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. His research interest is in how critical care data can be better managed, shared, and analysed for the benefit of patients. Ubiquity Press is a researcher-led publishing company specialising in open access to academic journals, books, and data.
Linda Gillard lives on the Black Isle and has been an actress, journalist and teacher. She is the author of six novels, including STAR GAZING, short-listed in 2009 for /Romantic Novel of the Year/ and HOUSE OF SILENCE, which became a Kindle bestseller and was selected by Amazon UK as one of their Top Ten "Best of 2011" in the Indie Author category.
Alex Porter formed Scot News Limited with the aim of establishing a democratising digital media platform with a self-sustaining financial model. We have the goal of meeting demand from consumers for news via digital devices who feel dissatisfied by the traditional top-down media. Our news and trends platform will lead to democratisation via readership participation in challenging the news agenda. We aim to pilot our platform during Scotland's referendum with our news brand Scottish Times.
Rachel is the Founder and 'Chief Everything Officer' for Luzme, the ebook search site. Rachel has been working at the bleeding edge of technology for nearly 3 decades. She's been on the Internet since 1986, and has watched with fascination how this most disruptive of technologies changes everything when introduced into established industries.
As a freelance writer, Andrew's work has appeared in The Atlantic, Fast Company, and other publications. He is managing editor emeritus of GOOD Magazine and was an early employee at The Huffington Post. He holds an A.B. in philosophy from Harvard University and is currently working towards an MSc in informatics at the University of Edinburgh.
Mark Coker founded Smashwords in 2008 to change the way books are published, marketed and sold. It was Mark's experience trying to get his own novel published that inspired him to start Smashwords. In the five years since its launch, Smashwords has grown to become the world's largest indie ebook distributor, serving indie authors, small presses and literary agents. Over 60,000 authors from around the world publish and distribute more than 200,000 books at Smashwords.
Mark Lester is Head of Strategy Development at the Open University (OU) and a member of the Executive team of Futurelearn, the UK's exciting new MOOC initiative. Prior to joining the OU, Mark held senior positions in the financial services sector and central Government, and was a managing consultant at a leading boutique strategy house advising organisations worldwide on healthcare financing, innovation, industry competitiveness, business planning and market strategy. Mark holds an MSc in Russian & Post Soviet Studies, a BSc in International History from the LSE & a PGCE.
